SUMMARY:Husky History Exploration: Self-Guided Tour
DESCRIPTION:What did this landscape look like before it became home to the University of Washington? How has it changed since the first building was built here 130 years ago? Which histories have been popularized by those in power\, and which have quietly been forgotten? The Husky History Exploration highlights ten landmarks significant to the university’s natural\, indigenous\, colonial\, and political histories. \nVisit these spaces in any order and learn about the University of Washington’s past and present. Write down the secret code at each location on the Husky History Passport – you can pick up a passport at the Dawg Daze information booth or Mary Gates Hall 120. Fill in all ten codes and you’ll be rewarded with a small exclusive prize and entered into a raffle for a larger prize. The Husky History Exploration can also be accessed on our website.

SUMMARY:Huskies for Opportunities in Prison Education: It's a Cell
DESCRIPTION:Ever wondered how large a solitary confinement cell is in Washington state prisons? Spoiler alert: it’s quite terrible! So terrible\, in fact\, that UW does not allow researcher’s to inflict the conditions of solitary confinement on animal research subjects. However\, the Washington Department of Corrections inflicts such standards on hundreds of people every day. \nJoin us to see a model of a solitary cell and a demonstration on the effects of solitary confinement on incarcerated people. We will provide snacks\, refreshments\, and plenty of opportunities to connect with our members and learn about the work that we do to uphold out mission statement: \nHuskies for Opportunities in Prison Education (HOPE) is a group of University of Washington students and community members dedicated to providing education on the prison-industrial complex and civic engagement. As abolitionists\, we believe in addressing the root of cycles of harm outside of systems of punitivity and view education as a tool for healing and freedom. We work in solidarity with incarcerated organizers to uplift their demands\, mobilize community members\, and connect students with incarcerated people.

SUMMARY:Old Books\, New Technologies: UW Special Collections and the Minor in Textual Studies and Digital Humanities
DESCRIPTION:Thinking about a career in libraries and archives\, publishing and editing\, or in a field dedicated to preserving and making accessible cultural materials and documents\, both physical and digital? Interested in learning to work with historical artifacts like early printed books\, medieval manuscripts\, and archival and cultural documents\, and with digital tools for creating online editions and archives for such materials? Curious to explore the role of databases and search algorithms in shaping how\, today\, we find\, access\, and understand texts and documents and to discover skills for analyzing those databases and building your own? \nLearn about the minor in Textual Studies and Digital Humanities from faculty\, students and librarians involved in the program. Hear about current student work\, current and upcoming courses as well as about resources in the libraries and other sites on campus for studying the history and future of how we write\, read\, archive\, story\, access\, and analyze cultural texts\, historical documents\, and other materials. Coursework and capstones in the minor offer a range of possibilities for hands-on\, projected-oriented work exploring the impacts of changing technologies and media forms on the writing\, reading\, editing\, archiving\, preservation\, and transmission of texts across history. These opportunities include working with historical materials such as handprinted books and manuscripts\, archival sources and artists’ books; using digitization tools to create and publish digital editions and exhibits based on those materials; and developing skills to build\, analyze and understand text-oriented databases like Google Books\, applying data science techniques in the humanities.
