SUMMARY:How to Make the Most of Your UW Networks with gesture
DESCRIPTION:You’ve probably heard that networking is important. But building meaningful connections doesn’t start when you need an internship\, research opportunity\, or job. It starts much earlier\, often without you even realizing it. The classes you take\, communities you join\, interests you explore\, and people you meet are already shaping who you are and where you might go next. It might sound simple\, but making the most of these everyday connections takes practice. \nIn this interactive workshop\, you’ll put that practice into action. Meet other students\, explore your story\, experiment with how you introduce yourself\, and discover how these everyday interactions can help you build your professional identity and open doors throughout your time at UW. You’ll also learn about gesture\, the College of Arts and Sciences’ early career lab\, and how to get involved through courses\, workshops\, internships\, and our year-long pathway built around real professional experience.\n\nLearn more about gesture: gesture.washington.edu/

SUMMARY:Swing Kids at UW Red Square Jam
DESCRIPTION:Join Swing Kids at UW for a fun afternoon social dance in Red Square! We will be dancing the Lindy Hop–  you can join us for our beginner lessons on Sept. 23 and 26 or our ballroom outing on Sept. 27 for an introduction\, although not required to have a good time at the jam. \nSwing Kids at UW are a group of college students dedicated to learning Lindy Hop swing. Lindy Hop is a partner dance developed in the 20’s and 30’s in Harlem\, NY. Born from African rhythms and European structured dance\, the style consists of 6 and 8 count steps borrowing footwork from Charleston and Tap. UW Swing Kids teach and encourage the university’s community to learn the joys of swing dancing through affordable weekly lessons\, quarter dances\, and social outing opportunities. \nContact: E-mail – swingkidsuw@gmail.com\, Instagram – @SwingKidsatUW

SUMMARY:Husky Satellite Lab- Can You Build A Flight Computer? (w/ cookies)
DESCRIPTION:Conditions in space are very different from the luxury we have on Earth\, whether that be temperature\, radiation\, available power\, etc. We can’t just put a MacBook CPU in a satellite– but we still need a computer that can receive\, process\, and send data while being hundreds of kilometers away from earth. Several issues can arise; whether it’s data connection getting cut off\, not having enough space for wires\, or ionizing radiation causing parts of computer memory to just… not work. \nSo\, what does it take to build a computer that is robust enough to control a satellite and survive in space? That’s what you’ll run through in this workshop through designing a mini flight computer and learning about engineering tradeoffs behind decisions like choosing a processor\, storing data\, integrating with sensors\, etc. Also\, there’s free cookies/candy :D! \nThis isn’t a lecture on aerospace engineering; only surface-level technical knowledge is expected. We’ll focus more on the open-ended design problems (there’s no “right” answer!) and how space hardware looks very different than the phone you’re reading this on.  If you’ve ever wondered how satellites actually work or you’re just interested in building cool stuff\, come learn what goes into designing the ‘brain’ of a spacecraft. \nLearn more about the Husky Satellite Lab and our projects at https://huskysat.org. If anything on our site interests you\, please apply! Or maybe get recruited here 😉
