DESCRIPTION:Hello new Huskies\, and welcome – our state is renowned for its forests\, and many of the trees that make up those forests can be found growing right here on the UW Campus. Native trees are truly a fascinating part of the landscape\, and this event is an excellent opportunity to get to know them all. In addition to simple identification tips\, this tour will also highlight the ecological and cultural qualities of our native tree specimens that make them such important part of the campus. Participants will also learn a bit about the food\, medicine\, and materials that each of these species has provided for the people of our region for thousands of years! SUMMARY:Bocce vs. Pétanque: French & Italian Lawn Games
DESCRIPTION:Come join the French and Italian Studies department for Bocce and Pétanque games in the lawn! Bocce and Pétanque are both similar Italian and French lawn games. Bocce\, originating in the sixth century BC (and is also an Olympic sport!) is played with eight bocce (larger balls)\, and one pallino (smaller target ball). The object is simple: toss the balls closest to the pallino. Pétanque\, on the other hand is a century-old game originating from Provence\, in the South of France. It is similar to bocce in its rules and objectives! \nThere is no need to have any experience with these games – the rules are fairly simple and easy! We will rotate between about 8 to 16 attendees at a time for these lawn games – and will have some special prizes for winners.

Our mission is to cultivate intergenerational connections between university students and older adults. \nWe do this by creating one-on-one pairs between student volunteers and senior residents via a matching process. Student volunteers and senior residents attend regularly scheduled meetings times (often once a week or once every two weeks).

DESCRIPTION:The Food Systems Nutrition and Health major welcomes you to join us on our Edible Trees of the World tour\, right here on campus! \nChances are high that at some point in the last couple of days\, you have eaten something that was grown by a tree. From well know fruits like apples and oranges\, to sap-based delights like maple syrup\, trees provide us with a variety of edible components and feature heavily in human diets across the world! Lucky us\, the UW is home to a wide variety of trees with interesting edible and medicinal traits\, and on this short walk around campus\, you can learn identification tips and the ways that these trees feature in culinary culture. This tour will also highlight the ecological qualities of these tree specimens\, and share a special emphasis on the ways we as humans have stewarded them throughout the millennia. As we move around campus\, you will have the opportunity to get to know the university a bit better\, and to meet fellow students with a shared interest in food and the natural world! \nDetails: \nThis tour takes place outdoors\, please dress for the weather! \nWe will gather the southeast corner of Raitt Hall (by the bench\, look for “The Broc”). \nOur walk will cover about a half mile of campus grounds. \nTour Guide: Theodore Hoss is a former UW graduate from the School of Environmental and Forest Sciences\, and has a Master’s in Natural Resources from Oregon State University. He continues to curate the UW Campus Tree Tours\, and also helps operate the Raven’s Roots Naturalist School\, teaching a variety of naturalist skills and working to help reconnect people with the rest of the natural world.
